Great Design Tricks for Small Interiors

From time to time I get the opportunity to help clients with the styling of their apartments and working through solutions to help improve the challenges they find living in small spaces.

 Small interior living can be tricky but it does not mean you need to compromise on style or the ability to create a home which still meets the needs of daily life.

Designing for small spaces requires a bit of consideration and some clever dual purpose concepts to achieve an interior which is comfortable, functional and still stylish.

Take for example one of the biggest challenges such as storage.

This is where good consideration for dual purpose items works really well.

For example living area seating or dining area seating can offer up the ability for built in storage.

Coffee table and cabinets can also provide storage.

Consider investing in custom made storage which addresses the challenges of the space to effectively create room to hide items away whilst making the most of awkward areas.

Get the most out of wall areas with floor to ceiling cupboards and shelves. They can even extend over doorways to achieve more storage in an area that would otherwise remain un-utilised.

Look at furniture pieces which function well in the space but do not take up too much floor area.

Custom made furniture which has dual functions is also a great way to achieve a functional interior. The other benefit is you can have items made which are smaller than your conventional furniture pieces without compromising on comfort.

 Visually keep things consistent to help make a smaller room feel more open and create a feeling of flow. By sticking to one consistent palette of colour, texture and complimenting elements a room will feel more connected and less chopped up.

Lighter colours will help make a space feel larger.

Large wall hanging or floor standing mirrors are a great way to open up a space.

Look at creating a bespoke solution for a dining zone by creating built in banquette seating which does away with many individual chairs surrounding a table and taking up space.

A large unit such as a sofa should be on legs so it appears to float off the floor and visually allowing for the space to look more open.

There are many options to help small or awkward spaces feel larger and more functional.
